I was a young man, new in Diplomacy, like her, new for a new life, in Europe so far away from our Continent, the one we loved since we were born because it was America. Mysteries, adventures: we knew about all of that and we had the knowledge of our education, to be ready for everything that could happen in these old countries that we called the beginning of democracy. I met her for the first time in America but I was not a lot more than a child and I don’t remember it. I was 32 now and I found the time to think about my private life, I wrote her a letter and she replied: Yes. She wanted to live with me in Prague but it was too soon. The City was big and I decided to rent for her an apartment and thanks to the Embassy, she worked with me as a Cultural Adviser as she spoke more than 5 different languages and was a foreign civilizations specialist, I was in charge of the Communication and Press department and then began our story!

It is during the war that Jonathan conceived the project to become a diplomat. He studied Law at the University but was not very good in geography, thinking that Europe was a part of his Country, never heard about the Atlantic Ocean. It is exaggerated, he was a good pupil but for him, the old Countries could have felt better if American. It was not possibe and the young man was a great supporter of the President Woodrow Johnson who was in charge of The United States at that time. “I want to visit all the countries of this part of the world!”, he said to Valentine, “And you?. The girl was not really interested and they spoke about something else. When se did not work at the Embassy, she like wearing black leather gloves and even in her office sometimes, she had them and nobody was surprised because it was a part of the fashion that she wanted to promote. Her own objective was not to visit Countries but to understand them from her desk and dream about this reality when she had the time to relax, back home during the evening, far away from the New Continent.

We were walking in the street one night and an old man asked us for the time. I did not speak very well their language and so, he understood all at once we were foreigners and was surprised that we were Americans. As we had a nice talk and a lot to tell him about the USA, he invited us for a lunch in his family the following Saturday and we were there with a present. His son proposed us to organize a visit of the City for the two of us but we told him that we already knew almost everything, sharing the same passion for history, monuments and culture. So, he let us know that he was in touch with many people who would want to immigrate in America. It was emotional and we had a good time. Then, Valentine scheduled to go back there once a year, or more and I agreed. It was the best way to be in touch with the population, to know a family and to visit it, from time to time. We had not a lot of friends and we were interested to know more about Prague residents because they spoke a few English and they were different.

But our life was really marvelous as we planned to get married in 2 years, a little less now, and we had to prepare everything for this wedding abroad, beginning by inviting our parents and best friends, a long trip that would be expensive but unforgettable: they chose to come by the sea and I understood that it was a smart idea because my mother like long travels. Almost everyday, after my work, before to have diner at Valentine’s home, I went to some libraries where they had some books about local poetry or in English and I prepared a text or two about my love for her, she was surprised and impressed.

At the office, it was a kind of daily routine, I was in charge of the information and read the press every morning while her culture attache job obliged her to go once a week from a town to another, where fraternities invited a member of the Embassy for international friendship and artistic exchanges. When she was late, in the middle of the afternoon, back from one of these meetings, I did not feel pretty well, then I realized that I was anxious and wrong to be anxious. She always came back and after diner, I returned in my own flat for some additional work, to prepare the next day at the Embassy. We did walks during the weekend, long walks, thinking and walking, speaking not too much, we never spoke too much. I was already somebody with a lot to say but unable to explain everything in my mind because I watched all the details of my daily life like an observer of myself. She called me Velvet Eyes!”
